DesignGuardian: ALMA, nautical mode [D]

What it is

The island of technical wind. San Pedro de Coche bay, with stable offshore wind and flat water, is one of the world’s best places to learn and perfect kitesurf. Around it: the salt flats of the western shore, the fishing villages and the pearl memory of the southern archipelago. Its wind blows all year, with the best window from February to June.

The western salt flats [E]

Coche’s western shore spreads salt flats and sand; Coche salt sustained fish curing for generations.

The pearl memory [V]

Coche had its own pearl-diving camps (rancherías), documented by archaeology alongside those of Margarita and Cubagua; Cubagua was the epicentre. Pearls were traded in San Pedro: the three islands’ production peak was 1943–1944.

Who receives it [Pr]

The host community is the coastal communities together with the nautical operators. Its Community Council is constituted in the Pilot Phase [Pr] and receives the community half of the retention.

Today the moray fishermen, the salt workers and the transfer sailors are Coche’s real community [V].

“An experimental proposal, subject to consultation with communities and experts should the State adopt the SOT.”

The Worlds are a proposal of the SOT Paraguachoa. Communities and experts define their final shape if the State adopts the system: every territorial decision is consulted with those who live it.

What it protects

Two wildlife reserves (2021) [V]

Coche protects 489 hectares in the Bahía El Saco Wildlife Reserve (Decree 4,550) and 2,916 hectares in Punta El Palo (Decree 4,551), both from 2021, over its coastal ecosystem.

The memory it carries

The memory of the Guaiquerí people, cited by page from the Cacique’s archive.

  • Coche means “deer” in Cumanagoto and Chaima; Las Casas wrote it down: “the one is called Coche, which means deer.” [V]

    F-0052 Mata García (1998), pp. 10–11

  • Coche’s salt flats made the ancestral curing of fish possible, a custom with few variants to this day, and fed the trade toward the Caribbean. [V]
