Macanao Wild

The wild peninsula of the west.

DesignGuardian: The Cacique Macanao, with offline GPS audio capsules [D]

What it is

The wild peninsula of the west. Dry forest and semi-arid landscape, with an exceptional geology: the high-pressure eclogites, a body of more than one kilometre of Cretaceous rock, outcrop here. The Margarita parrot, emblem of recovery, nests in its ravines and the EcoGuardians watch over it. The visit takes place by day, with a certified guide — exclusivity is the conservation tool.

The verified product

Eclogites of ~90–100 million years [E]

Margarita’s eclogites formed under high pressure in the Cretaceous (~90–100 Ma) and outcrop on both peninsulas; the largest body, over one kilometre, lies in Macanao. They are one of the Caribbean’s most singular geological windows.

The Margarita parrot: the emblem of recovery [E]

The yellow-shouldered parrot population grew from a minimum of ~650–700 individuals to more than 2,800 in 2026. In Quebrada La Chica, 98 nests were counted and 18 EcoGuardians watch over the nesting season (late March to August).

Ramsar Site No. 857 — La Restinga [V]

La Restinga Lagoon has been a Ramsar site since 4 September 1996, with 5,248 hectares: the archipelago’s only international conservation designation.

Who receives it [Pr]

The host community is the native guides and the environmental brigade. Its Community Council is constituted in the Pilot Phase [Pr] and receives the community half of the retention.

Today the parrot EcoGuardians — with Provita and Macanao’s communities — sustain the monitoring and reforestation [V].

What it protects

Macanao Wildlife Reserve (2021) [V]

The peninsula holds 12,013.85 hectares under the Macanao Wildlife Reserve (Decree 4,545, Official Gazette 42,182 of 3 August 2021), alongside La Restinga Lagoon National Park and its Ramsar site, and the AICOM A-VE-001 caves.

The memory it carries

The memory of the Guaiquerí people, cited by page from the Cacique’s archive.

  • Macanao, “land of the macanas”: the legend gathered by Rosa Acosta names the hardwood trees — yaque, cuica, guayacán — with which the Guaiquerí made their weapons. [O]

How one travels today

Itinerary seeds with what already exists in the territory — without promises.

  • Cross La Restinga lagoon by boat through the mangroves [O].
  • Walk the dry-forest trails with a certified guide [D].
  • Spot the parrot with the EcoGuardians, respecting the nesting season [V].
